A scare of a lifetime
Are humans like cats, do we have nine lives? Are we given near death experiences as a form of self growth and lessons? Or are we merely unlucky?
As a general, I am a very healthy person. I have been put in some compromising situations over the years that have been out of my control. Like, when I had a freak fall when I was just a toddler and cracking my skull open. So yes, you can say I was dropped on my head when I was a baby. Every pun intended. Then, when I was 5 or 6 and was attacked by a dog, at 12 years old had meningitis, at 19 had a bacterial infection throughout my body, and just last year in my early 40's I had a huge tumour removed. That brings us to our story today.
It was the absolute worst pain I have ever endured. I stood up from my desk at work, and shooting down my whole left side of my groin area was this horrific pain. It felt like intense labour pains. I was hunched over waiting for it to subside. It never did. I started walking around, ok maybe this is just gas pains. I tried everything. One thing I knew, I had to get home. Once I got home, noting eased up. I tried stretching, and every yoga pose I could think of. Nothing helped. I then went in the shower. If it was a muscle spasms of sorts the hot water would help ease it. That is when I knew I was in trouble, I started vomiting. The pain kept getting worse. I had no choice but take myself to the hospital..(I hate hospitals)
I was very lucky, I went through triage and they put me in a room right away. Time seems to stand still when pain takes over your body, it cripples you. The doctor saw me almost right away, he asked the normal questions, did I do anything different in my routine? I was ready to snap the pain was making me delirious, I was ready to pass out. They laid me down on the bed, and gave me a shot of something, it felt like a miracle in a syringe. The pain was nothing more then a dull throb. Perfect, I can go home. All I could think about was that I needed sleep before work the next day.
Well I was delusional, they weren't letting me go anywhere, I was rushed down for CT Scan. They thought maybe I had Kidney stones and one possibly got lodged trying to pass it out. Nope, kidneys were fine. What they found though was something I could never fathom. So the tests began. I was sent home from the hospital at 1am with a prescription for morphine. Yes the pain was that bad.
There was nothing they could until the morning, the ultrasound technician was already gone for the night.
I had to make quick plans for work, calling people to fill in for me, I wouldn't be at work for the next few days...but they days turned into weeks..
Stay tuned for part two, The Diagnosis
on the mend,
Carrie
